These have yielded positive conclusions:
•Diesel savings of up to 16 percent
•Availability exceeding expectations (Availability: 80%; Expected: 70%)
•Long lifetime of the diesel engine due to operating at the optimum speed range
•Significantly improved emission values, especially in less NOx (reduction of nearly 50% compared to standard diesel buses), hydrocarbons and particulate matter emissions
•Low noise levels inside and outside during stops and even while driving
There have also been a number of negative conclusions:
•Heating oil demand in winter is too high. One remedy is the use of exhaust heat as additional heating
•A driver assistance system for acceleration is still missing
•Intelligent control and predictive energy management have to be improved
•Hybrid buses are too heavy. A solution is to reduce vehicle weight by using lightweight components
•The cost of a hybrid bus (€700,000) is nearly double that of a standard diesel bus. Thus, without public funding, the purchase of hybrid buses is not economical.
