Buses in Holland
« on: 29.05.2007, 00:03:16 »
In Holland we have linebuses from, mainly, eight bus-bodybuilders.
  • Den Oudsten
  • Berkhof
  • Van Hool
  • Volvo
  • MAN
  • Mercedes
  • Dennis (GB)
  • Wright (GB)
The attachments show a Van Hool AGG300 from Utrecht (built 2003), a Volvo 7700 from Veolia Maastricht (built 2006) and a Den Oudsten Alliance from Hermes Heerlen (built 2000).

Hi,

Arnhem, which is 6 kilometres away from my home, is a unique city. It is the only city in Holland that has trolleybuses. There are four trolleylines (1, 3, 5 and 7) and seven other city-lines.

Next to that there are a lot of inter-urban lines (about 20).

In my village, Oosterbeek, there is also a trolleybus running (line 1). It's the first trolleyline from Arnhem, build in 1949. The oldest trolleybus from Arnhem is also still running.

A picture of a Volvo-Den Oudsten B88 trolley (1990), a Van Hool articulated prototype-duobus (trolley and diesel-1993), a new Berkhof Premier articulated trolleybus (2002) and the oldest trolleybus (1949) are attached.

Wow, it's allways nice to see so classic vehicles that are still running and furthermore, have a decent maintenance (unlike the probably 50-year-old Saurer in Ruse)   . But what make is the trolley from the picture?

Chassis is from British United Traction, an English firm. The bodywork is from Verheul (although it looks a bit familiar to the old Skoda's). This was also a Dutch company. It has later been taken over by Leyland.

[attachment=1204:attachment]A picture of the new Mercedes Integro (O550), for 'intercity' services.

By the way, in Holland we have had five Mercedes Conecto's (O345), which were not entirely buses meant for a country like Holland... (for a picture, see http://hugobus.fotopic.net/p37536254.html)

Hi, welcome to our forum.
I'm interested what is your opinion about Volvo 7700? Is it better, compare to Den Oudsten and other city buses. It looks very similar to old Karosa/Irisbus in front side.

Hi, thank you

Well, if I may say so myself, I think that the Volvo 7700 is one of the better citybuses now driving in Holland. It's more comfortable then a Berkhof, or British model (like Dennis Dart or Wright).
I even like them better then a mercedes O530. But I think that they're also build for a short period (mostly 4 to 8 years). So after a few years, these buses are not as good as, for instance, a den oudsten, which was build for a period of (at least) 12 years.

Best citybuses we have ever had are in my opinion still the Hainje buses (now also driving in Burgas).

Hey, Hugo Buss! Did you ever have a ride into a double-articulated Van-Hool? Can you explain us what's the feeling? Do drivers say it's hard to drive it?

Yes, I have been a few times in these buses. They are, for passengers, the same as a normal articulated bus. For a driver, it's not that more difficult then an 18 meter bus. The whole bus follows nice, if you understand what I mean. You have to take the curves a bit 'wider'. Despite of that, drivers get a special training for these buses and they are mostly driving on special bus lanes.

In Arnhem we have four of these Volvo-Berkhof buses. Most of them already went to Estonia for a second life.

In Holland, we now also have a couple of Irisbuses. They are driving for Arriva in Dordrecht and Gorinchem.

Hi! The MAN Caetano VIAbus is indeed only to be seen in Holland. It is a product made for Connexxion Holland by MAN and Caetano. The VIA in VIAbus stands for Vianen, the place where the dutch MAN dealer is settled (I didn't knew this, untill you've asked the question, so thanks for asking  )

Attached another picture of a VIAbus and a picture of another Dutch MAN product, the MAN-Berkhof 'Scout'.

It is the 'older' version from the Volvo 7700, build in 2004.
