Chavdar
« on: 22.03.2015, 11:01:17 »
A newspaper article, published on 29-7-1979 in a Greek newspaper about the Supply of Balkancar buses to Greece, was sent to my by a friend. I translated the article in English.

The potential to buy Bulgarian buses is considered- The payment back by agricultural products is accepted

A team of Bulgarian experts is expected to arrive in Athens for discussions with Greek experts about the supply of city buses to Greece, according to relevant sources.

From the same sources, the Bulgarian side is interested to directly supply the MAN-engined (under licence), 3 door, 11m city buses, with body by Setra of W. Germany.

These buses will be built in Bulgaria.

Since the above mentioned buses will be bought from Greece, Bulgaria is willing, according to information, to accept their payment with Greek agricultural products, such as tobacco, cotton, olive oils, citrus etc., or even buying Greek built buses for the Bulgarian Tourist Organization (Balkan Tourist).

The tourist buses will be built by Damco Autoimbex Hellas S.A, who is the exclusive representative of the Bulgarian truck and bus builder Balkancar. The Greek participation, according to calculations, reaches 60% of the total bus value for the body, and the air-conditioning  system, which will be installed in Greece.

The subject of the city bus supply to Greece was discussed, according to our information, during the 7th committee of the Greek-Bulgarian Interministerial Committee, which took place about 2 weeks ago in Sofia, but also during the short visit of the vice president of Bulgaria, Mr. Lucanoff.

As it is known, the Bulgarian official, who came to Athens on his way back from Libya, had a short meeting with the Minister of Merchant, Mr. Panagiotopoulos,

Bulgaria, who expresses the wish to supply Greece with city buses, is also interested for the development of industrial co-operation for city buses with our country.

The number of the city buses that the Bulgarian side suggests is not appointed, but will vary between 200-300 vehicles.

So, initially they intended to build Setra-bodied buses, not the ones that finally were built.
BTW, Mr. Lucanoff (Andrey Lukanov) was a high party official - at that time he took positions in government related to the foreign affairs, foreign trade. He was one of the leading figures in the political changes in 1989 and became Prime Minister from the Socialist Party (formerly Communist) after 1990. He was assassinated in 1996.

I think this is what they wanted to build (does anyone know when this bus was built?):

But I do not know why they ended up in the B13-20. I have to say that my friend has also discovered in old newspapers, that we were to buy Ikarus 190, but we ended up with 260! ;-)

This bus has been built in 1978 by the company Atlas, on Bulgarian base. It remained only a prototype, in difference with the 12-meter intercity buses - many of these have been built by Atlas.

According to the city buses, Bulgaria firstly offered a standard bulgarian two-door city bus Chavdar 11G5, based on Skoda 706 RTO chassis, but with some changes - big route indicators, plastic seats and painted in blue and white. Two prototypes have been built but this model has not been approved by Greek authorities. For this reason, a brand new integral model B13-20 has been designed in 1979 specially for export to Greece, a little bit later this bus appeared in bulgarian cities too.

I think that Greece bought Ikarus 260, because Ikarus 190 has been much more expensive.....Also I know that the new flapping "planetary" doors before Chavdar B13-20 have been absolutely unknown in Greece. In spite of the fact that the "folding" ones at that time were old and obsolete, for example Ikarus factory for the first time used these new type doors on serial production buses in 1978 - on Ikarus 26-s for Ethiopia - one of the poorest countries in the World......Also for Tanzania and Mozambique in the begining of the 80-s......

Wow! I did not know it was that old! Of course, I did not know its existence, until not so long ago...! It was built in Greece, on a Bulgarian chassis....

Cgavdar 11G5, you mean this:
http://buschavdar.tk/images/11G5/11g5-005.jpg
Are there photos of the 2 prototypes? I have never never heard about them!!

When you say that a brand new integral model was designed in 1979, you mean that the B13-20 was designed specially for Greece, and it was not a product that Chavdar designed as a bus for its range???
The planetary doors, are the 2 leaf ones, that the Bulgarian-built Chavdars had? They were unique, according to all the previous buses we had, as all of them (I have not seen any WITHOUT 4 leaf folding doors) had the "normal" type of doors, like the Ikarus 260. Ikarus 190, had the 2 leaf ones. I do not know why we never bought them, but from the late 60s onwards, most of the buses were 12m, with 3 doors.

I have seen photos of Ikarus buses with 2-leaf doors for Tanzania (1980, 281.03) and Mozambique (1982 261.03), but never for Ethiopia...!!

A photo of the 11G5 prototype for Greece is available in the book.

Yes, B13-20 has been designed specially for Greece, for the delivery tender made by the municipality of Athens and thus become one of the serial standard models at this time.

I am speaking exactly about the 2-leaf doors.

Photos of 2-leaf-doors Ikarus 260 buses for Ethiopia you can see in the big photo galleries available from the German Ikarus forum: http://www.ikarusbus.club/ . I am not publishing the exact links because all these photos cannot be seen without a registration there.

OK, let`s try:

Wow! Super! A lot of interesting information today!! We had a bus designed just for us, but nobody knew (and I do not think that people in the bus owning company would be interested) to preserve one...!

I can see the links, as I am already a member! Hey, it has to do with Ikarus buses!! ;-) Many thanks for your help! You are super!

Провадийската Родина си е жива и здрава! Още си е край ж.п. линията, но не се знае докога.
