"It must be mentioned here that Solaris trolleybuses are marked in very different ways, according to seller and maker of electric equipment. Trollinos are (or were) sold not only by Solaris Bus & Coach itself but also by Trobus, Ganz Transelektro, Ganz-Škoda, Solaris Czech (only in the Czech Republic) as well as by Škoda Electric. In the case of trolleybuses with Cegelec electrics additional DC lub AC were used as symbols of alternate or direct current. Trolleybuses from Gdynia and Budapest do not have similar marks but the latter were sold as Solaris Ganz Trollino (later Ganz-Škoda Trollino). Vehicles fitted with Medcom are in turn designated Solaris Trollino 12M or 18M. Quite another story are trolleybuses delivered by Škoda. Although this firm abandoned production of complete trolleybuses with it's own bodies, it is still using it's traditional symbols when sells trolleybuses by itself. Vehicles with Solaris body are sold then als Škoda 26Tr, Škoda 27Tr or Škoda 28Tr (respectivetely with T12, T18 or T15 body). Trolleybuses contracted by Solaris Bus & Coach and equipped by Škoda on Solaris Bus & Coach's order are sold as Trollino 12S or 18S."

There are two aspects:

1. High-speed facilities. I can observe it in operation since 1998. The only problem with running through it was at the beginning in the drivers' heads. They simply must have some time to use to drive without speed reduction. Now trolleybuses run at crossings at the biggest available speed, like motorbuses. Of course, where the new wiring is properly designed...

2. Plastic trolley poles and reliable retrievers. When all trolleybuses were fitted with new retrievers and plastic poles several years ago, three goals could be achieved. First, due to less weight of poles, a force pressing poles to wires could be reduced - in effect the wear of wires was reduced. Secondly - less centrifugal force of poles allows much higher speeds at curves, even at places where overhead network is old yet. Finally, number of  damages to overhead network was dramatically reduced, so costs of  repairs. Replacement of poles was not cheap, but cost effective in a short time!

You can see that plastic poles can be fitted to very old trolleybuses, too :)

1971?
Very interesting map :fan: ,personally  I think it is from the period 1967 - 1969, because the bus lines in Varna are more than the bus lines in 1966, but the road to Golden Sands is not yet reconstructed (this happened in 1969).
But bought during a stay in Varna in 1971.

These trolleybuses were used in Sofia in their original Dortmund livery. The lower part of the body was brown, the thin strip under windows was dark brown. I have two photos of these trolleybuses taken in August, 1971. Unfortunately these pics are black and white :(

At least a few of these trolleybuses were repainted in Sofia into red and cream.

CEGELEC TV Europulse (IGBT), 6-pole asynchronous motor 175 kW
MEDCOM ANT 175-600 (IGBT), 6-pole asynchronous motor 175 kW
Škoda BlueDrive (IGBT), 4-pole asynchronous motor 160 kW
Škoda BlueDrive (IGBT), 6-pole asynchronous motor 175 kW
Vossloh-Kiepe (IGBT), 4-pole asynchronous motor 160 kW

It is very simple. When trolleybus is sold by Solaris Bus&Coach itself it is Solaris. When by Škoda Electric - it is Škoda. 180 trolleybuses sold to 5 cities are Škodas because Skoda took part in these three tenders. In last tender in Stara Zagora SBC won and will deliver trolleybuses under its logo.

SBC operates mainly on West European markets, so Solaris trolleybuses with Škoda equipment are used in such cities as Cagliari, Castellon, Coimbra, Landskrona, but also in Lublin in Poland and in Budapest. Škoda operates on markets where it was present earlier, i.e. in Bulgaria, Latvia or Lithuania (tender for 13 trolleybuses cancelled).

By the way, it's very interesting, why SBC and not ŠE took part in recent tender in Stara Zagora :)

When you tell about retrievers, please note that type and placement of it is choosen by the customer. The same concerns many other details like like passengers seats, passenger information devices, interior design, etc. etc. and may be equally the same or different, indepent of whether it is Skoda or Solaris.

By the way again, without good knowledge you cannot judge what differs one trolleybus from another. In two of the oldest Solaris trolleybuses in Lublin retrievers were hidden. Howevers, drivers claimed it as uncomfortable in use (and causing hand injuries) and they were replaced... :) Look at the photos from 2010 and 2012: http://trollino.mashke.org/deutsch/obus.lublin838.php

I think I can clarify some of these themes.

Buses based upon Skoda 706RTO were produced in PL from 1959. In fact Polish were only bodies. They were fitted in Jelcz to complete chassises that came from Czechoslovakia. Small number of chassises was bodied also by Bałtyk company in Koszalin. These were of another design, somewhat reminded Bulgarian Chavdars.

By the way, it's not known why these buses were named Skoda, though they were made by Karosa. :)

Anyway, Jelcz 043 were intercity buses, Jelcz 014 - tourist buses, Jelcz 272 - city buses, Jelcz 021 - articulated and Jelcz 041 - suburban ones with one sliding door (these were produced only for Czechoslovakia). There were also passengers trailers of type P-01. When Czechoslovakia limited and then stopped production of this chassis, they started to produce it in Poland, with SW680 engine, ZF gearbox and Raba rear axle. Production of this bus, though rather small by the end, stopped only in 1986.

As far as I know, articulated buses were sold to East Germany, trailers to Czechoslovakia and East Germany.

The first articulated Jelcz buses were made by bus operator in Warszawa in 1962 from two standard buses. In 1964 Jelcz started to produce it as AP-02 type. It was very long (17750 mm) and in 1967 was replaced by modernised and shorter version 021.

There was only 1 articulated Skoda 706 RTO in Bucharest and there was no import from Poland! It was also rebuilt in operator's workshops from two buses. I have a photo of it.

SW 680 engine was produced in Mielec under Leyland licence since 1966 as trials with Polish-built engine for big lorries were unsuccesfull. When Poland bought a licence for a big bus from Berliet in 1971, one of the conditions was use of as many Polish parts as possible. SW 680 was used in this modern bus, too. In fact it was a new bus, longer than French original and equipped with 3 doors, known later as Jelcz PR110U.

Lorries produced in Starachowice (Star) are quite another story, they were equipped with other Polish engines, produced in fatory in Andrychów and used also in San buses.

2? : http://www.offroad-bulgaria.com/showthread.php?t=82010&page=17
:neznam:
