Hello
First of all, I would like to apologize for writing in English, I am Romanian (from Bucharest) and I can't speak or write Bulgarian :( I red this topic using Google Translate.

I saw that there were some discussions about the DAC & Rocar buses / trolleybuses. "DAC" was a common name for buses and trucks in the communist "era". However, all DAC buses, minibuses, vans and trolleybuses were built in Bucharest and the trucks were built in Braşov.
The truck factory in Braşov is now called ,,Roman Braşov" (former "Întreprinderea de Autocamioane Braşov" = The Truck Enterprise Braşov). They built a few buses from 2006 to present (see this link), but their main activity was - and still is - building trucks. However, the engines and some other components for the buses built in Bucharest were delivered by Roman Braşov.
The bus factory in Bucharest is called Rocar (well... it WAS called Rocar, because it was closed in 2002). When they started to build the Roman 112 bus (=Dac 112 UD), the factory was called "Autobuzul" (witch means "The bus"), so they had to give a name to their products. The name Roman came from "Romanian MAN" (so it is not related with the Romans) - the first "modern" (for those times) buses and trucks were built under MAN license. In 1979, the Roman 112 was redesigned, so the Dac 112 UDM appeared (and the articulated version, 117UD and, later, the trolleybus versions). The UD are an acronym from "Urban Diesel", and the UDM from "Urban Diesel Modernizat" ("Modernized Urban Diesel"). The name "DAC" was used by Rocar until 1993. In 1993, the factory's name was changed from "Autobuzul" to "Rocar" and all its new products were renamed "Rocar". So, the 112 UDM buses built from 1993 were called Rocar. The Dac/Rocar 112 UDM bus was in production from 1979 to 2000 (more then 12.000 units were built), and the articulated bus Dac 117 UD form 1979 to 1998 (there are only small differences between a 1979 Dac bus and 2000... the engine, gearbox, the aspect... are the same)!

About Ploieşti:
The first trolleybus line was 201 (Pod Înalt - Hale), later extended to "Gara de Sud" ("South Rail Station") - it replaced bus line 25 (linie 25 is now available only when the boulevard is closed). From Hale to Gara de Sud its the main boulevard of the city, that is closed in summer week-ends. So 202 is the "long" line (Pod Înalt - Gara de Sud) and 201 it's short version (Pod Înalt - Hale), that is in service only when the boulevard is closed.
Linie 44 is a former bus line, converted to trolleybus in 2006 (on 16th of November, 2006). The line was then renamed to 244. However, RATP didn't have, at the moment, enough trolleybus drivers, so buses were used together with the trolleybuses. The buses displays weren't updated, so many people were confused. So, RATP decided to rename the trolleybus route back into "44".
The tram network in Ploieşti has only 2 routes: 101 and 102. There is no 33 (and never was). A list of the RATP's vehicles is available in my web-site about Ploieşti: http://transportploiesti.trei.ro/Parc.htm

Bucharest: On 18th March is possible to have a strike at the subway company, Metrorex. That will be extremely "funny" for those who use the subway for their daily journeys. Speaking of subway... it's interesting that the biggest neighborhood in Bucharest, called "Drumul Taberei" (~300.000 inhabitants), has NO subway.

There are many things to say & write about the Romanian transport. So, any question is welcome, I will try to answer as fast as I can.

Google translation:

Ploieşti:
Ploieşti: http://transportploiesti.trei.ro/Parc.htm

Hello,

We have DAC/Rocar trolleybuses in service in:
-Baia-Mare: 1 x Rocar 217E and 3 x Rocar 212E (they were in service in 2008, but some 2nd hand Volvo trolleybuses were bought... I do not know if the DAC trolleybuses are still in service)
-Cluj-Napoca: many Dac 117E, Rocar 212E and 217E -> See attached photos
-Constanţa: 5 x Rocar 212E and 1 Dac 112 E
-Piatra Neamţ: at least 2 Rocar 212E
-Târgu-Jiu: 12 x Rocar 217E + 5 x Rocar 212E (in a very good condition)
----
-Iaşi: the trolleybus network was closed in 2006 and the trolleybuses (Rocar 212E (some being former 217E "shortened"), Dac 112 E (former 117E), one Rocar 512E end some Skoda) were confiscated (!) to pay the company's debts (!!). However, they are still in the garage (you can imagine how they look after 4 years
-Slatina: the network was closed in 2006; I do not know if the 3 Rocar212E still exists
-Vaslui: the trolleybus service was stopped last year and the 4 Rocar 217E are waiting for better days
---
Museum trolleybuses:
-Timişoara saved 2 x DAC/Rocar 217E, one DAC 317 ET (our DAC 317 had electronic equipments made by ICPE Bucharest, not Chavdar) and one DAC 117 E. More details can be found on RATT (Regia Autonomă de Transport Timişoara)'s Forum: http://www.ratt.ro/forum2/index.php?showtopic=194
-The nongovernmental, non-profit organization "Transira" saved a DAC 117 E from Mediaş and move it to Sibiu in 2006. However, the employees of "Tursib" (the local transport company in Sibiu) stolen most of the components :( so the trolleybus is now in extremely bad condition. Details: http://forum.transira.ro/viewtopic.php?t=1459

Where are you from? Pernik?
What Bulgarian cities had DAC trolleybuses (and how many units)? I knew about Varna, Pernik, Plovdiv. I went to Varna last year, but I found no DAC trolleybus... all that remained from the DAC trolleybuses were some lights inside at least one Skoda trolleybus (I also noticed that the price of a trolleybus ticket was more expensive that in my country: 1 Leva = 2,2 RON... the most expensive trolleybus ticket in Romania is 1,8 RON).

Only 6 DAC are still in use?! :( Your trolleybuses were better than the one delivered in Romania (because they were for export... and all things made for export were better than the rest).

Quote
Which city are you from in Romania?
Bucharest. Unfortunately, all our DAC trolleybuses and most of our DAC buses (only 2 remained) were scrapped in 2006 - 2008.

Well ,thank you very much for the pictures and especially the links :) I was curious to know something more:) I will try to answer your questions.

There were DAC troleybuses in Plovdiv,Varna,Sofia and Kazanlak and of course 6 are still in use today in Pernik .

In Sofia those trolleybuses were in service for a very short period in the '80s after that they were transfered in other cities .

There were approximatevely 40 in Plovdiv and the last DAC was stopped in 2005 (as I can remember) .

In Varna is the same situation - they had 37 of them and they were fastly scrapped so the last was stopped in 2003-2004 .

Kazanlak had only DAC trolleybuses but in 2002-2003 trolleybus network in Kazanlak has been definitevely closed (the only bulgarian town with removed trolleybus network) because of poor reliability and with it the  DACs in service there . We discussed in the forum what happened with those troleys but unfortunately noone has information about Kazanlak's DACs . :(

I can tell you a lot about Pernik's DACs becuse I live there and I have always liked trolleybuses transport in my town.At the beginnig we had 20 DACs who have been the first trolleybuses introduced in service in 1986.I think eventhought our DACs (in Bulgaria) were better than yours their maintenance was extremely bad (as everything in our country :( ) and maybe the main reason is that we were missing spare parts so all trolleybuses were amortised very fast and some were used for spare parts for the others. 10 DACs in Pernik were fastly amortised and stopped before 2000. Until 2004 the remaining 10 DACs  were in an extremely miserable condition when 6 of them were basicly repaired and renewed (new parts were bought from Romania as far as I know) firstly the idea was the whole 10 to be renewed but there wasn't enough money for 4 of them who were scrapped in 2005.Today those 6 DACs in Pernik are the last 6 in service in Bulgaria. Now their condition isn't good any more as unfortunately the future of trolleybus transport in Pernik .In fact from the beginning there were problems with the electronics of bulgarian DACs and in Pernik we had two of them who burned, same happened with one in Plovdiv and one in Varna.I join pictures to all 6 DACs in use in Pernik as attachments ;)

I want to ask you about photos I saw of your DACs - the seats are plastic. Is this the original type of seats of romanian DACs? Ours have thicker foam plastic seats and it's one double seat I could'nt find a picture to show you :(

The first photo is of DAC 119 a while after being renewed, others are more recent anf you can see their condition .

Thank you for the pictures. It's such a pity that Pernik is so far away from Romania :(

The original chairs were made from wood/plywood and they were used to all urban vehicles made by Autobuzul/Rocar from 1975 to 1993. However, some local companies wanted different chairs, so some buses and trolleybuses had more comfortable seats, for example this bus

I found on www.railfaneurope.net one inside photo of a DAC in Pernik: Link. These double seats were used on most of the Roman 111 inter-urban buses, with different coatings (Example).

The plastic seats were first used in 1993. First seats of this type were made from a thin plastic, like this. Then, the thick plastic seats, with "Rocar" logo were introduced /they were also used on more football stadiums!). In this photo LINK you can see 2 seats of this type: one is "normal", the other is covered with something quite comfortable (but not original). These seats came in many colors (blue, grey, yellow etc.), probably depending on what the factory (the plastic factory) had in stock.
Of course, there were many modifications and a lot of improvisation... for example, this DAC bus (photo) had some extremely comfortable seats... but I do not think they were put in the factory (I saw many DAC buses and trolleybuses in Romania, but none had this type of seats).

So... you are really lucky. Here is a list of Romanian cities that closed their electric transport networks:

Trolleybuses:
- Brăila (1999)
- Iaşi (2006)
- Satu Mare (2005)
- Sibiu (2009)
- Slatina (2006)
- Suceava (2006)
- Târgovişte (I think there is also a Bulgarian city with this name) (2005)
- Vaslui (2009)

Trams:
- Braşov (18.11.2006)
- Constanţa (21.11.2008)

With an uncertain future:
Trams: Botoşani, Sibiu, Reşiţa
Trolleybuses: Braşov, Constanţa

Wasn't the tram network in Constanta preserved? I know the trams don't go on service but at least the depot and ex-Berlin cars are not scrapped, are they? Now,while I'm quite clear why the tram network had to be shut down, what led to so much trolleybus wires being disassembled and why exactly the current 2 routes were not converted to bus operations?

Thanks!

No. Only a few rails are still in place (near the railway station), the rest are already removed.
Most of the trams are still in the depot... but after more than 2 years standing in rain and snow... their condition is not so good.

Quote
what led to so much trolleybus wires being disassembled
That was caused by a BIG aquisition of MAZ buses. Also, the mayor of the City, Radu Mazăre, had shares at the leasing company that brought the buses.

Quote
and why exactly the current 2 routes were not converted to bus operations?
In 2002, 15 Rocar 412E trolleybuses were brought (the contract was for 50, but the leasing company, Dunărea Leasing, didn't pay Rocar for more vehicles and brought the MAZ buses). The 15 vehicles were amortized this year... so their future is not so bright.

Oh my god, what a pity!! :( Why did you have to remove trolleybuses from so many romainan cities? Was the situation so bad? What was the pretext for stopping trolleybus' movement?

In most of our cities troley compnies don't have any profit but inspite of this municipality runs them.As you can guess of course troleybus park is very old and amortised and cable network in awful condition but ... trolleys are still running (luckily for me being a troley fan :P ).

At least have you kept the trolleybus infrastructure in those cities? So that eventuall u this transport could be restored one better day with european union's help  ?

And concerning the seats - on the link you gave with the intercities bus ,original seats of Pernik's DACs are the same but in red colour! On the photo from railfaneurope they are upholstered because they are not very hard and tеаr ;)

What was the pretext for stopping trolleybus' movement?
Money... they said that they were too expensive in their usage (!), they were old, without low-floor and in a poor condition (of course, the mentainance was extremely poor... for example, that's why Rocar 217E / 212 E runs without problems in Târgu-Jiu and newer vehicles of the same type were stopped in Târgovişte, Vaslui or Slatina). Some mayors or other "official" peoples had their interests in leasing companyes or bus dealers. Another reason is - they ussually say - that the trolleybuses are slow. Yes, if there are many car parked under the trolleybus wires they can be blocked. But that is NOT the trolleybuses' fault.
Speaking of this, you can see on my Youtube channel some trolleybuses blocked by parked car (including one runing with reversed polarities on the other way wires, including a switch).

Quote
cable network in awful condition but ... trolleys are still running
I saw that in Ruse (I have to post those pictures... but some other time)... when I arrived I saw the wires and I was convinced that no trolleybus runs there (I also saw some "abandoned" wires, like those on Al. H. Petrov Blvd. - where I was able to use my cell phone on a Romanian network without roaming... but that is mega-off-topic).

Quote
At least have you kept the trolleybus infrastructure in those cities?
In Iaşi, Satu Mare, Slatina and Suceava they started to destroy it.
In Târgovişte the wires are still in place (and in a good condition), but some big trucks damaged some portions that weren't repaired (see LINK).
In Brăila most of the wires are in place (!) even if last trolleybus was in service 11 years ago.
In Vaslui the wires are still in position.
In Sibiu the wires are still in place, but not for long.

In Braşov, as they replaced some routes with buses, they urgently removed the wires, so other trolleybus routes were collateral victims of these replacements and of the totally STUPID system of one-way streets (some with 8 lanes!) and roundabouts, without traffic lights, with pedestrian crossings far away from the roundabouts (many have died because even the drivers found the new street system difficult to use). For example, at the main station, the street has 8 lanes (!) after the roundabout and 6 near the roundabout. Of course, the pedestrian crossings are on the 8 lane section, right into a bus stop (so some cross in front of bus, others on the back... so a lot of accidents happens).

Quote
So that eventuall u this transport could be restored one better day with european union's help  ?
It's possible, but for this you need projects. And, even if I'm shame to tell it, the Romanina authorities are extremly lazy when it's about the welfare ot the regular people, even at the elections... they only make promisses, and, eventually, thay "pay" the votes with food (ussually beer + "mici" (some very tasty small saussages made on the grill - best when the grill is with wood and coal). So no one wants to make this projects... it's more proffitable for them to scrap the electric transport networks (there are kilometers of high-purity copper, iron rails and a lot of other materials that can be sold as junk) and vehicles.
There is an exception: Craiova will build a trolleybus network (they have a tram line from East to West) form North to South of the city.

- Constanţa (21.11.2008)

With an uncertain future:
Trams: Botoşani, Sibiu, Reşiţa
Trolleybuses: Braşov, Constanţa

It's really very sad, that so many cities have lost their electrical transport, particularly their trams. Nowadays the creation of a completely new tram line or network in poor countries like Bulgaria and Romania seems to be impossible, because of the high costs of those type of transport. That is way it's better to save at least the tracks when there isn't enough money for the maintenance of the trams routes.
Actually in October last year I was in Constanta and was surprise to see no trams. In June 2005 I was for first time there and I knew that there was a tram network, below you'll find a picture from Constanta, made on June, 18. 2005

In Bulgaria there are trams only in the capital and I think we should take care of our electric transport, because it is ecologic.
Actually there are also in BG trolleybus networks with an uncertain future: for instance these in towns of Gabrovo and V.Tarnovo.

Thank you for the pictures. It's such a pity that Pernik is so far away from Romania :(

No it isn't so far!
Bucharest - Pernik  450 km
Bucharest - Oradea 585 km.

Underground trains already resemble more of the cattle transports than transportation system for humans.
Actually cattle could never be transported in such awful conditions due to animal welfare regulations. But no one gives a damn about how Londoners travel!

The trouble with Constanta was the railroad. It was so bad to the point of being dangerous. There was either the option of full rail reconstruction and new tram or closing the system.

OK, that's right. When the condition of the tracks is so bad, that the movement of the rolling stock is dangerous, they have to be shut down. I meant that the tracks should have to be saved (at least the area of the tracks) so that a future reconstruction will be possible, then there is enough money for it.
Now the streets are some wider, using the ex-tramway tracks. That is sad.

Dr2005, I watched your videos in your You tube channel.I noticed that your troleybus park is quite new (for our standarts) and especially I was astonished from the irisbus trolleybuses you have. It's great! How many of them you have and is it only in Bucarest ?How did you buy them (a project, with national bugdet's financing etc)?

And...is it a routine to change like this ( http://www.youtube.com/transportromania#p/u/8/Kq6aoCk96Cs ) two ways because I saw it twice ?

Concerning the wires network in Tărgovişte(in our Tărgovişte there is no public transport ;) we have a village called Slatina too :D ), I'm ashamed to admit it but in Pernik our network is far worse than this one on the photos I saw ...

You are right, but the price of the train is double or even more (+ there is no student 50% discount for international journeys). Probably is cheaper to use a "minibus" (freight van converted into passenger vehicle... very dangerous, but very popular in Romania :( ) to Ruse ant to take the same train from there... according to BDJ's web-site, the price is only 31.95 BGN (= 67 RON) for Ruse - Pernik and back. Only from Bucharest to Sofia it's 105 RON. You really gave me a good ideea, maybe in the summer I will came to Pernik for one day (or more if I found a cehap hotel).

It was more dangerous for what be call "buffalos" (drivers that believe that the street is their property). Unofrtunately, they are in every city :(

We have 100 Irisbus Citelis trolleybuses: 98 with chopper and DC motor (#5301-#5398) and 2 with inverter and 3 pahse AC motor (#5399-#5400). The last 2 were considered prototypes, and sold at the same price as the "normal" 98 trolleybuses. They were assembled by Astra Bus Arad (it's not the same factory with Astra Vagoane Arad), with DC motor (Power: 150 kW) made by UMEB (Uzina de Maşini Electrice Bucureşti) and chopper made by ICPE-SAERP Bucureşti. First (#5301) was delivered in 21st of December 2006, the last in the begining of 2008. Another 100 - 150 units will be bought (by public auction, but the result is already known :)) ) when RATB will have money to pay them.
The vehicles were payd by the municipality, from the local budget. The situation is with the 1000 (yes, 1000 :( ) Citaro. They also wanted to by some coaches for the personnel ... but the auction was canceled because the winner was not Mercedes.

Ussually not, but there are a lot of "buffalos" that park on side walk, on the firs lane and even in the middle of the junctions, so there is impossible for the trolleybuses to pass. Here' what happened:
Some trollebuses were blocked at the junction between Ghe. Costaforu Street and Ţepeş Vodă Street. They were unable to take a right turn because of some parked cars:
First, the trolleybus-drivers had to test their skills at the junction between Rondă Str. and Ghe. Costaforu:

Then at the blocked junction:

The driver tries...

... but this Citroen is parked right in the junction!

Another try... but the drivers of B-70-THO and B-73-DEK made sure that's impossible:

Ghe. Costaforu Street is with 2 ways, but if 2 trolleyuses met there... there is not enough room for booth, because of the parked cars.
The trolleybus is put on the other way wires and moved a few meters:

Than the action in the video happened. Twice, because it had to turn rleft but there is no switch there:

Victory!

You can see here the rest of the pictures.

I atach a small map of the area:
- yellow line: trolleybus wires
- red points: switches
- blue arrows: direction of movement
- pink cercle: the blocked turn
